Denise Thomas

Denise Thomas is a well-regarded family law practitioner and mediator, with experience helping clients through divorce, separation, child custody and other domestic relations matters.

Following her graduation from Tulane Law School in 1998, she served as a law clerk for the Louisiana Supreme Court. In 2002, Denise moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico. She has worked with the law firm Sommer, Udall, Hardwick, Ahern & Hyatt, served as a law clerk to the Honorable Martha Vazquez, U.S. District Court Judge, and operated her own law office, Denise Thomas Law, before joining Sommer, Karnes & Associates.

Her legal practice has included work in the areas of construction and property litigation, contract and tax disputes, federal employment, civil rights and criminal litigation, appeals and domestic relations matters. While Denise enjoys having a breadth of experience in multiple areas of the law, her legal practice is now primarily focused on helping families navigate some of the most important and challenging legal matters in their lives, including: marriage, adoption, divorce, and custody issues. Denise strives to help her clients with respect and understanding while offering competent and intelligent counsel, strong advocacy, and a rational approach to achieving successful long-term outcomes for couples, parents and their children.

Denise has advanced training in mediation and settlement facilitation. She regularly serves as a mediator in family matters and other civil disputes, helping individuals resolve their issues without the stress and expense of court. She is also a member of the New Mexico Collaborative Practice Group, an organization dedicated to helping couples divorce outside of court, resulting in greater privacy and long-term benefits for the couple and their children. Recognizing that each couple is unique, Denise helps her clients determine which method of obtaining a divorce is best for them.

Outside of the office, Denise is actively involved in her two sons’ school and extracurricular activities. She is also dedicated to assisting and supporting the Santa Fe Public Schools. She serves as a Director for the non-profit foundation, Partners in Education, and is an active volunteer and board member at her children's elementary school.
